considered the most important piece of female clothing: Matrix Press
Publisher There is another piece in women's clothing that has been the
target of such different reactions than the panties. She was also the
cause of pink faces, frank laughter and even embarrassment. Its history
over the years, the evolution and importance of this part are described
in the book "Under the cloth - The history of underwear," the English
author Rosemary Hawthorne (Matrix Editor). They are little more than two
centuries of existence - and it is almost nothing compared to other
pieces of clothing. It starts in 1790, when the winds of fashion would
suffer a drastic change of direction. The People's Revolution erupted in
France led to an overall simplification of the entire clothing industry
in Europe, and women began to wear elegant dresses with high waist
dress inspired by the ancient Greek. Made of thin muslin, the so-called
"empire dresses" were tremendously sexy and were at the height of
fashion - but also left the lower parts a bit too airy (Sexy Chemises).
And so it was around 1800 that the panties had their first big chance
to make history. The first model to appear on the market, called
pantaloon shorts or, in general came down to the knees or ankles, and
was made of a fabric "flesh color" similar to the stockings. Reportedly,
he was adopted by women only important French Directory and some of the
bolder ladies of Western society, attuned to the forefront of fashion.
In England, in 1901, with the death of Queen Victoria, her eldest son,
Edward VII - ascended the throne. And during his nine-year reign, the
English women trajaram beautiful clothes because it was no secret that
the King admired the beauty of women, and the entire court and high
society reflected the actual preferences favoring women elegant and
well-arranged. Passed through the American feminist Amelia Bloomer and
reaching into the thong, the book shows that the underwear is related to
both the fashion and women's rights. Did you know ... That before 1800
no respectable woman wore pants? That Victorian women wore beneath their
petticoats, calçolas covering part of the legs? Which at the time of
the European War knitted by hand their own underwear? Author Rosemary
Hawthorne graduated in Arts at the Royal Academy before turning his
interests to the study of clothing. And since then, has become the
leading authority on British history Underwear, amassing a vast personal
collection of pieces of historical interest. Hawthorne is known in the
UK today as Knicker Lady, the Lady of Panties, name of the show has
